“Johnny, don’t run into the street,” is an easy parameter to set. We know it will save their life. Yet, what about setting parameters for your 8, 12 or 16 year old. Items in the Podcast:

Kids need parameters. They need parameters for themselves.

The Goal is that kids would have their OWN parameters.

Who should be making the rules?

  • Have the kids make the rules.
  • Involve the kids in making the rules.

When the kids turned 16 in the Leman household:

  • “What insurance do I have that you will conduct yourself in an appropriate manner?” was the question I asked each kid.
  • The Leman kids made the rules about driving etiquette.

Make it safe for your kids ideas.

  • Say, “Your ideas are welcomed here.”

How old to let kids set their own parameters?

  • 8, 9 or 10 for sure.

Parenting Tip/ Pocket Answer
