Question #1 Rena:
I have an 8 year old that wets his bed and then sleeps in his urine. It stinks like an adult peep and his older brother doesn’t like the smell. He won’t tell me when he wets the bed and just sleeps in the same sheets as if it is nothing. What should I do?
Dr. Leman’s Answer:
First of all, bedwetting in general is closely associated with deep sleep patterns. For those kids, they will likely grow out of it. The best advice I can give you is to make sure the mattress is securely covered with plastic.
For this particular boy who won’t clean up after himself, the answer is simple.
One of my “pocket phrases” will help you out: “B doesn’t happen until A”
That is right! What is the regular order of the day? Breakfast? A ride to school?
If he does not get his sheets going in the laundry, he does not get whatever comes first in his day.
Question #2 Megan:
I homeschool my 7 year old and need to keep my 3 year old distracted so I can stay focused on schooling. My phone has been the go-to as a tool, but now the 3 year old only wants my phone. How can I fix this?
Dr. Leman’s Answer:
Don’t start habits with kids that you don’t want to continue until marriage!
Yes, you started this situation!
We rely on screens too much. Personally, I believe that a three year old should never touch a phone.
Break this habit, and teach her to amuse herself with boxes, blankets, crayons, playdough. If she can’t amuse herself, put her in her bedroom while you work with the older child.
